My new favorite fantasy fiction of all time? Perhaps. This book was absolutely lovely. If you enjoy fantasy fiction I HIGHLY recommend picking up The Priory of the Orange Tree. Shannon has rewritten the fantasy novel to center around WOMEN. Her use of gender roles is present so naturally but is so counter what we have always read in fantasy that it can come across as a quick slap to the face. A friendly, yet a little aggressive reminder, that our normal perspectives of gender still need to change. Shannon weaves together a beautiful tale full of adventure, good and evil, dragons, inspiring heroes and stunning cultures. It’s a long book and worth every single page. This book is heavy and light all at the same time so I’m going to pair it with a heavily flower laden mug and a light G&T.
