Warning this book is a HORROR novel. It is not easy reading. I struggled with it a bit at the end until I had a conversation with a friend who loves Tremblay’s work. She pointed out the importance of being aware of mental health issues in our society and how little emphasis we put on them. Tremblay writes his horror based on this idea… Are the antagonists in this book in need of help or are they fully aware of what they are doing? The novel centers around a family of 3 who are alone in a cabin in the woods for a holiday. Four strangers arrive at their cabin and tell them that the end of the world is coming and to stop it the family must sacrifice one of their own. Would you do it? Would you kill a loved to save the rest of the world? Another warning, if you like answers to all the questions this is not the book for you. I’d suggest pairing this book with something pretty strong, it’s a tough read so why not burn the throat a little with a spicy whiskey like Whistle Pig poured over ice in a dark (to go with the theme of the book) mini tumbler.
