Wow. Just wow. I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. I was drawn in by the idea of sentient octopuses/octopi (turns out both options are legit grammar) and then the book provided so much more. This book is less about humans talking to octopi, although they are a main part of the story line, and more about what is consciousness. The book is definitely science fiction and is set in a dying earth steeped with AI. Dr. Ha Nyugen joins a team that includes the worlds first android. As she navigates researching the octopuses you’ll learn more about the state of the world from a few different perspectives, the second main one being the director DIANIMA, a gigantic tech company, that is spearheading the research and is the inventor of Evrim, the android. This book is full of twists and turns and will keep you reading on while at the same time challenges you to consider what human consciousness is and whether it’s a good thing for this planet. I’d pair this book with an Old Fashion in a collab tumbler, and don’t skip the cherry, the sweeter finish will lessen some of the more intense parts in the book.
