With a title like this and a strong recommendation from two friends when I was on the hunt for a book WITHOUT a love story I was immediately intrigued. This is a non-fiction book about the Donner Party. This NOT your typical Donner Party book. This book is incredibly well researched and is actually written following the story of Sarah Graves and newly wed who is to California with her family and new husband in search of a better future. Brown take you through the entire journey starting from what it took to pack up lives and walk across the country. He weaves in so much information about the time that it’s hard to judge what happens especially when Brown takes pages to describe what actually happens to the body as starvation and hypothermia set in. I’d recommend checking this book out with a steaming cup of Tension Tamer tea in a tall mountain mug to give yourself a little comfort while listening to a very uncomfortable journey.
