This is a historical fantasy novel that I have had my eyes on for a while and ended up listening to in the studio the last week or so. Bardugo is quite creative with this storyline. Set during the Spanish Inquisition the main character Luiza is a scullion maid who can preform small miracles. The mistress of the house learns of the miracles and tries to use them to advance her family to the detriment of Luiza. Her miracles are linked to her Hebrew heritage so performing them put her at risk of being caught by the Inquisition. The story is an interesting presentation of the time and the perils that came with a Hebrew heritage from the ruling class. There is a classic heterosexual love story that I think actually deterred from the story line. This book I would pair with a glass of Tempranillo in a Many Blossom tumbler.
