THE GIRL WHO FELL FROM THE SKY

MUG: Subtle Mountain Mug

BOOK: The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi Burrow

DRINK: Black Coffee with a little honey

Stark. Perhaps the best word to describe this book. I found The Girl Who Fell From the Sky at a used book store and am not disappointed I bought it on a whim. This story line is written with the bare minimum of details. There were times I had to reread sections because they were such a heavy blow but came so starkly that I almost didn’t recognize the gravitas behind the words. This is the story of a young, biracial girl growing up with her grandmother after she survived a traumatic event and lost her family. She is attempting to find her way in the world as she learns about race and class in her grandmother’s home. The interwoven second story is a continuation of our upside down take on race and class in America. A beautiful, simple and impactful novel, I’d pair this one with a simple cup of black coffee in a mountain mug with just a touch of honey to sweeten the harsh realties in the book.
