I feel a little bad listing three heavy audiobooks in a row but that’s just how it played out. This book was in the top 3 books for the New York Times in 2023. It is an incredibly well written book but I must warn you that it is incredibly hard to listen to and may bring you down a bit if you are affected by books in anyway. Ok now that I’ve given you a small warning… This book is 100% science fiction BUT it is also 100% where our penal system could end up. Prisoners are some of the biggest celebrities in the world because they are put into gladiator rings and must fight to the literal death. Their entire lives are broadcasted and created into reality TV. The public are completely hooked on watching every minute of the prisoner’s lives and deaths. The book is interspersed with current prison stats making the connection that this could happen feel that much more real. Since this book is pretty dark in it’s nuggets of truth I’d pair it with sweet beverage such as a vanilla latte in a mountain mug. (And yes the irony of these pairings is not lost on me.)
