The visionary science fiction author, Octavia Butler, delves into confronting racism, sexism and white supremacy now and in the antebellum south through a modern black woman transported back in time to a southern plantation. Each time Dana, the main character, is transported back she is faced with saving the life of the slave owner, Rufus. They are somehow linked across time and Dana faces challenge after challenge with incredible courage. This book is fiction and written in the 80s but it forces us to confront issues that are still happening in the 21st century. It is beyond time that white supremacy, racism, sexism, etc should truly be things of the past. This book clearly shows us just how needless so many of these ‘isms’ are and how much the privileged continue to put pressure on others to make change.
